Dave,
I went to the site and I cannot get the movies to play on realplayer.
Yes, I downloaded and autoinstalled the codex from the link provided. Yes I have lowered my security setting to medium and accepted all cookies. Still no dice here is what happens. R.P. loads up (it is my default media player). R.P. connectes and begins loading then just stops. I have NEVER had this happen when I have gone to Quicksandmovies.net in the past. I need some help please. FYI my I.S.P. is AOL.

If problems encountered with winmedia, try using the DivX player, free download at www.divx.com --- all the latest clips from Dave work perfectly on it Smile

RealPlayer cannot (as far as I know) play those clips, or at least, not without a lot of help.

There's a link on the same page as the clips to the codec you need to make it work in Windows Media Player.

Dear Dave and Fans of Quicksand Everywhere, Especially Online:

I'm having an odd problem.

I can't play any of Dave's clips. I thought at first it was because I had not downloaded all the codex and associated programs, etc. But today, browsing the DIVX site, I downloaded a short movie they provide to see if my configuration is right, and it played beautifully!

I am using an iMac, so I am using the DIVX program for Quicktime, along with the Mac codex, and, as I said, it plays the DIVX movie just fine. But I get an error message with Dave's movies that the compression shows data corruption. Now, I know many of you have downloaded Dave's movies just fine, so that is not the problem. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong???

Dave,
I have found a way around the Realplayer issue. I was able to download the clips in question and view them through Windows Mediaplayer. Problem solved!!! Thanks for all that you do. You have great stuff to boot. Keep up the good work and...THANK YOU!!!

I should really just give up on computers.
Acidtester isn't just some name i picked out.
I really did eat a ton of acid, and now i get confused very easily,
especially with this kind of shit.

I went to the link at quicksand movies.net,
downloaded the delegate file, like it says,
dropped that into my Library/Quicktime/ folder
downloaded DivX 5.2.1 and put that on my desktop.
should i put that DivX in the quicktime folder too??
should i get someother program to play it???
even though i followed only the link posted at quicksandmovies.net?
should i just fucking give up and try to imagine these clips in my head from everyone else's comments??

Quikmoose,
I'm using an iMac too,
how did you get it to work???

The codec for the Xvid AVI files that Dave is now using is not yet available for QuickTime on Mac OS X. The version that is there for the Mac (v0.1) does not support this version (v1.0.3) of the AVI, even though you have DivX 5.2.1 and the XVIDDelegate.component v1.3 from 2003.

However, the VLC video player does work for this format (and many others, including .WMV formats played by Windows Media Player v9.0 for Mac OS X). It can be downloaded at...

...and at...

Dear Gang:

I only just discovered that this is where my question wound up (e.g. in the tech section of Deep Sinking, instead of the sinking section...).

To Dave: In the past, before you used the new codex, things worked fine. I could download your movies without problem and use Real Player for Macs. So that's why I didn't understand this new problem.

To Crypto: Thanks for the explanation on why DIVX doesn't work. Swell! I'm afraid I can't use the alternate player, as I do not have Mac System X, only Mac 9.1.3 or something. Maybe I will try to download it and see if it will work anyway, although the Mac System X is so much different than anything before it, I doubt it will work. And yes, I will probably someday move up to a new Mac and use System X, but it isn't in the cards soon (no mon, no fun...).

Oh well...

And here I thought I was one of the last hold outs from switching from OS 9.x to OS X. Rolling Eyes

Yeah, it was a significant change from 9 to X... a lot of old things I miss. But the earlier versions of X were bad; Panther is good however. I switched only last year, primarily because there were things coming out for X and only having updates for X. Crying or Very sad

So I made the switch. Confused

Concerning VLC, it is only available for X; their website even states...

"Note: There is not, and there will never be, a version for Mac OS 9."

VLC is the only software (for the Mac) I found that plays the new format being used by Dave's clips; RealPlayer used to work for the .RM files Dave used to use just fine for me, too.

However, I don't have such software, but perhaps someone here could use their PC software to convert the new .AVI format to .MOV or .MPG or .WMV or other "old standard" format that is useable by software running on MAC OS 9. Smile

(In fact, I believe Jiminy once stated about a year ago that he does often use his powers for good from time to time. Wink )

Crypto,
i downloaded the VLC program,
however, at quicksandmovies.net each time i click on one of the clips, quicktime automatically starts up.
since i'm using an iMac, there's no way to right click on the clips.
so, how do i get the VLC thing to play those clips?

do i need to download the clips the watch them,
and if that is the case, how do i do that?

i'd appreciate any help,
including the help you've already provided.

thanks

Yes, it would be best to download the clips first.

To "right click" on a Mac, you control+click to bring up the context menu... or just click & hold to bring it up.

Yes, the default application is QuickTime, so control+click on the file, select Open With > Other..., then check Always Open With and locate/select the VLC application. It will change the default app from QT to VLC and open it up.

Very Happy
